RE: Tiffin warranty claims from dealers

It's no wonder many of us will forgo a warranty for a huge cost savings of buying used as many repairs can be made without ever leaving your driveway, either by doing it yourself or calling a mobile service. The cheapest warranty there is, comes from pocketing the cash in the beginning and using it for any repairs that might be required. I'm a do it yourself'er by default, but will sub out if need be, especially when on the road. I can't even imagine driving any great distance for getting work done, as the cost per mile alone, will pay for many repairs.

Solar Battery Charger

I have one of these mounted on top of my front roof AC, but don't know if it works or not. What would be the best way to properly check it's operation? Should there be voltage present on the cables with the batteries disconnected and nothing plugged in anywhere? One things for sure, the coach batteries won't stay up forever, without charging them periodically.

My present coach came with a factory equipped SAFE-T-PLUS so I really don't know the difference, but I would think that it has it's benefits and certainly can't hurt anything, especially in the case of a drive wheel blowout. This rig tracks perfectly, but then my old P chassis did pretty well also...and I don't really remember if the old coach had one or not, but I think it did.

Installed a camping world hitch roller and still can't get in my other driveway, where I would rather be for a few months while I have guests. By the time the wheel begins to do it's job, the gas tank and the generator exhaust are dragging the pavement, so that's it. I'm not going with expensive driveway mods or putting down a load of lumber, every time I go in and out of my property here. This is the only place I've ever had a problem, which may be a good thing. What I don't get is the difference between my old 34ft. rig without a tag and this 36ft. with a tag, that should help if anything. This one is definitely lower and some of this might be attributed to the 225 metric vs. the 8R tires that were on the other coach. Hopefully they won't pave the street again, otherwise I may not be able to get in the other drive either. Naturally, this drive is the only one on the street that I can't get in and I'm the only one on the street with a motor home. This was the very last thing that I would have ever thought about when purchasing this rig, since there was no problem with the other one.
I wondering if the manufactures have given any thought to this very common problem. It certainly doesn't seem so.

from all of my experience in towing, i have found that a trailer is the only way to go. you can tow anything you want or already have, less investment than a tow bar assy and brake buddy. you always have your brakes and lights already there, no insurance to pay and just a very few dollars for plates.you can back it up if need beanywhere too. absolutly no wear and tear on the towed vehicle and loading and unloading is just as fast as a tow bar. for me... its the ONLY way to go.
I've observed and thought of these quite often and my question is...why don't we see more of them? This is definitley the way for a classic car or truck or a vehicle that's not a good toad candidate. I saw one made from aluminum with a Ferrari on top in NC once.
Obvious downfalls are....tow weight and storage of the trailer when not in use, including many campgrounds that may not be so accomodating...and you can forget a lot of the National and State Parks.

Had my pinion seal replaced at the chevy garage in Junction TX while traveling the country this past summer. It wasn't leaking too bad but decided to go for it. I think it was about $175 for the job and they did count the threads before they begun, so as to put it back where it was. Seems that torque doesn't enter in to this for proper backlash. They did a good job and It's been dry every since....about 5K miles so far.

I say, don't tow unless the toad is also your everyday vehicle. Now, anything can be towed, it's just a question of how much you want to spend on it. We choose not to tow and rent a car if we really need one. Hopped through Yellowstone with the rig, staying at a few campgrounds along the way, drove it over to ...old faithful...and bicycles did the rest. Rented a car in las vegas for 5 days for a grand total of $56 bucks and even drove it to the west wall of the grand canyon.

Not sure if you're referring to the GFI tripping under ground fault or the ckt. brk. due to overload. If the former, then it's possible that you have a fault in the appliance. If the latter, then something else is probably on the same circuit and creating an overload.

The only batteries that I've ever heard of benefiting from a discharge were of the Nickel Cadmium variety and definitely not anything with wet cells. Sounds to me like you're trying to administer them a slow death.

Since the labor isn't that much more, always run the 240/ 50 amp service. That way you're ready even if you only have a 30 amp rig now. All you need is an adapter cord for going either way, but having the 50 amp available has it's advantages, just like in most modern RV parks.

Go with the metrics for sure, but no larger than the 225s or you'll need mods done on the rear dually's and besides there's no reason to go above that. These should be direct replacements and done on a daily basis with good results. Brands are always up for argument but most all will do the job and there really isn't any bad ones including the chinese brands,....the firestone/ford scandal took care of that. It is easier to get replacements out on the road with the name brands, especially when a freebee is warranted.

I didn't find my leak, the first time or even the second time I looked,... so try another inspection immediately after running and then shutting off the engine, by crawling around under the coach. Inspect anything that's rubber, for dry rot cracks that may be a little wet.

Just took a trip up the mountain going from 360' elevation to 6300 feet. The last 4,000 foot climb had a long pull at 8% or so grades. Normally my Bounder with a 454 Chev makes the climb OK. Except this time during the last 25 miles, I could smell gas fumes (not exhaust) as I drove. There are no leaks in the tank, the lines or the fuel filter.
Any ideas what could cause this? Could it be a fuel vapor storage canister? Any and all input will be appreciated.
One other thing. I need to replace my EGR valve. The smog test guy says that it's not working 100%. Could a faulty EGR valve cause this gasoline fumes problem?
I had this happen once on my old coach (87 pace arrow..454 chevy w/a carburator) except I was crossing the everglades. I later discovered a rubber fuel hose leak from underneath the engine compartment. It wasn't much of a leak while underway and a wonder it didn't suck enough air to kill the engine. Probably because this unit had an external rear electric fuel pump, besides the OEM mechanical pump.

just curious how fast people drive their Mh on the highway. I have a 87 Allegro 24 ft. its fine up to 60 (55 when towing my motorcycle). over 60 it gets a bit of side to side motion. just wondering if this is normal. I have replaced the steering stabilizer and I will put new front shocks on in the spring.

It's trying to tell you that motels aren't supposed to be driven faster than 55mph....just cars.
Seriously, it should trac straight and true at most any speed. Have the front end checked out first, then if you want, you can add some after market products, beginning with a steering shock stabilizer, which you've already done...a set of Koni shocks or Bilsteins all around...then maybe some huge sway bars front and rear...and that ought to do it.
You might want to put your coach description in your signature....it eliminates guessing for your readers.

Mine is a Tropi-Cal, which was their top of the line gasser at the time. It is quality built and has held up well, but can't say for some of the last National's before the company's demise. Just look it over good and see what can be corrected, then if the price is right, go for it.

We did ours for two days, 10 miles from home and then made a 2500 mile round trip. Went across the state for our second coach, but we were a little more seasoned by then and had the final draft of our ...DON'T FORGET LIST...and our...GETTING UNDERWAY LIST...Not too much you can forget if you properly check off each item. Nowadays, the basic things are already in the RV and just get replenished or checked off repeatedly.
